Upcoming events with Luciano Berio's music (January – April 2019)

At the beginning of 2019 numerous events featuring Luciano Berio's music are scheduled. Here follow the most outstanding concerts (for a complete list, please visit our Concert calendar).

Folk Songs are performed in Costa Rica for the first time, featuring mezzo-soprano Marcela Alfaro and the Orquesta Sinfónica de Heredia conducted by Joan Pagès (Feb 22 and 23). Otto Romanze e Quattro versioni originali della "Ritirata Notturna di Madrid" di L. Boccherini, with tenor Enrico Casari and the Orchestra di Padova e del Veneto conducted by Marco Angius are scheduled at Teatro Pollini, Padua (Feb 28) and at Teatro La Fenice, Venice (March 1st). The Otto Romanze are again on the bill, along with Siete Canciones populares españolas, in Frankfurt am Main (March 30) and Köln (March 31), featuring Rolando Villazon and the Filarmónica Joven de Colombia, conducted by Andrés Orozco-Estrada. Quattro versioni originali della "Ritirata Notturna di Madrid" di L. Boccherini are also scheduled in Innsbruck with Camerata Innsbruck CINNS conducted by Maria Makraki (April 13).

Weekend Berio in Paris

From February 1st to 3, at the Cité de la Musique / Philharmonie de Paris, is scheduled a Week-end Berio+, which in addition to the performance of some 'classics' of Berio’s catalog (including Sinfonia, Sequenza VIII and Opus Number Zoo), it will present two novelties of exceptional importance. Friday, February 1st (Salle des concerts, 8.30 pm) will be presented L'Orfeo, a reworking of Monteverdi’s masterpiece conceived by Berio in 1984 and premiered in Florence with a group of composers including Luca Francesconi, Ludovico Einaudi, Maurizio Dini Ciacci and Betty Olivero. In 1986 the work was reperformed in Florence in a new version, to then fall into oblivion lasting about thirty years. Angela Ida De Benedictis – who oversaw the reconstruction of the score of the work in the 1986 version, staged on this occasion – will report the events of this collective project in a preparatory talk before the performance (Amphitéâtre, 7.00 pm). Among the performers are some of the musicians who took part in the world premiere and the reprise of 1986 (Maurizio Dini Ciacci, who will conduct the opera, and Francesco Pisanu).

Luciano Berio: Interviste e colloqui

Following the publication of Luciano Berio’s writings in 2013, a selection of his major interviews is now issued for the first time by Einaudi, Torino. The new volume Luciano Berio. Interviste e colloqui, edited by Vincenzina C. Ottomano with an introduction by Paul Griffiths, features over fifty conversations, interviews and inquiries held with Berio over a period ranging from the early 1960’s up till a few months prior to his death in 2003. The texts, accompanied by editorial notes and comments, offer a multiple perspective on the composer’s life and work in an idiom that is at once approachable by a large spectrum of readers and surprisingly new for those who are familiar with his theoretical writings. The constant interaction of questions and answers encourages a spontaneous and immediate mode of communicating thoughts and issues that are central to Berio’s world view and poetics, such as music theatre, language, oral tradition and music history, electronic and computer-assisted composition, musical education. The portrait of a composer emerges who is deeply (and often critically) involved in the contemporary scene, convinced of the role of music and of the musician in the formation of a better society.

Berio dialogues with Domenico Scarlatti in the new album by Andrea Lucchesini

In September 2018 the album Dialogues by pianist Andrea Lucchesini was released by the German label Audite. On the album, Lucchesini puts in dialogue the Six Encores – six piano miniatures composed by Luciano Berio from 1965 to 1990 – with six Sonatas by Domenico Scarlatti. Lucchesini explains: «The combination of Scarlatti's Sonatas and Luciano Berio's Encores was the last of the many gifts I received from him. We worked together in the choice of Scarlatti's Sonatas that could be adapted to his pieces. It was a very emotional work». To the combination Berio-Scarlatti, Lucchesini has juxtaposed that between Idyll and Abyss by Jörg Widmann and the Six Moments Musicaux D. 780 by Franz Schubert.

Claudio Monteverdi and Luciano Berio

The year 2017 closed with three events dedicated to the relationship between Luciano Berio and Claudio Monteverdi, organized on the occasion of the 450th anniversary of the birth of the composer from Cremona. On November 23 and 24 the international study meeting Orphée Aujourd’hui.

Upcoming events with Berio's music (May – October 2018)

From the end of May to October 2018 numerous events featuring Luciano Berio's music are scheduled. Here follow the most outstanding concerts (for a complete list, please visit our Concert calendar).

Laborintus II is scheduled at the DR Koncerthuset of Copenhagen with Demian Vitanza as speaker, the vocal ensemble Theatre of Voices, the DR VokalEnsemblet and the DR SymfoniOrkestret conducted by Franck Ollu (May 31). The month of June starts with the performance of Rendering in Oranjewoud (Holland), with Benjamin Levy conducting the Noord Nederlands Orkest (June 1). Folk Songs are scheduled in three concerts between June and August: in Bochum, Germany, with Cristina Zavalloni and the Bochumer Symphoniker conducted by Enrico Onofri (June 2); in the frame of the Kuhmo Festival, Finland, featuring the mezzo-soprano Victoire Bunel and the musicians Alberto Mesirca, Christoffer Sundqvist, Harri Lehtinen, Janne Thomsen, Julian Arp, Lior Ouziel, Tuija-Maija Nurminen and Yuval Gotlibovich (July 23); at the Salzburg Festspiele, with mezzo-soprano Marianne Crebassa and the Wiener Philharmoniker conducted by Esa-Pekka Salonen (August 5).

Sinfonia will be performed in Seoul, with the Swingle Singers and the KBS Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Yoel Levi (July 20); in Milan – with Berio's Quattro versioni originali della Ritirata Notturna di Madrid di L. Boccherini – featuring the Swingle Singers and the Filarmonica della Scala conducted by John Axelrod (September 23); in Prague, with the London Voices and the Czech Philharmonic conducted by Semyon Bychkov (October 17, 18 and 19).

Upcoming events with Berio's music (March – April 2018)

In the first months of 2018 numerous events with Luciano Berio's music are scheduled. Following is a list of the main events until April (for a complete list, see the Concert calendar).

From March 22 to 25 is scheduled the London Ear Festival, with performances of Sequenza I, Sequenza IV, Sequenza VI, Cries of London, Gesti, Sonata and Six Encores (for the complete program, click here).
Three important events will feature performances of Sinfonia: at the Elbphilharmonie, Hamburg, with the Neue Vocalsolisten Stuttgart and the Philharmonisches Staatsorchester Hamburg conducted by Alejo Pérez (March 18 and 19); in Munich, with London Voices and Münchner Philharmoniker conducted by Semyon Bychkov (April 21 and 22); in the frame of the Klangbrücken Festival, Hannover, with The Swingle Singers and the Niedersächsisches Staatsorchester Hannover conducted by Stefan Blunier; the same concert will feature also performances of Festum and Fanfara (April 23 and 24).

The concerts featuring Luciano Berio’s music continue during the year 2017. Here follows a selection of the most outstanding events (for a complete list, see the Concert calendar).

Coro is on tour between March and May under the direction of Teodor Currentzis, featuring the Mahler Chamber Orchestra and the MusicAeterna choir, with performances scheduled in Ferrara (March 30), Munich (April 1st), Cologne (April 2), Hamburg (May 29) and Saint-Denis (May 30).
On May 18 in Bologna is scheduled a round table entitled "C’è musica & musica di Luciano Berio (1972): attualità di una serie televisiva tra divulgazione e sperimentazione”, conducted by Angela Ida De Benedictis.
Beatles Songs and Chemins II are scheduled at the Auditorium Parco della Musica, Rom, performed by the Ensemble Modern, featuring Anna Clementi and Megumi Kasakawa, conducted by Tito Ceccherini (May 22). Rendering is scheduled in several concerts in Görlitz, with Andrea Sanguineti conducting the Neue Lausitzer Philharmonie in a performance, which features also choreographies by Dan Pelleg and Marko E. Weight (June 24 and July 7, 8, 9).

Now, And Then

In october 2017 the ECM Records published the album Now, And Then featuring the Orchestra della Svizzera Italiana and guitarist Pablo Márquez conducted by Dennis Russel Davies. The album orchestral transcriptions of works by Frescobaldi, Legrenzi, Gabrieli, Viadana and Wassenaer realized by Bruno Maderna, and Chemins V for guitar and chamber orchestra by Luciano Berio. The booklet includes the texts Now, and then by Paul Griffiths, and Scrivere – e riscrivere. L’interpretazione o l’analisi della musica by Michele Chiappini and Angela Ida De Benedictis.
