Elbphilharmonie Hamburg: Rendering with Symphoniker Hamburg and Andris Poga

On June 15, 2025, the Symphoniker Hamburg, conducted by Andris Poga, will perform Rendering by Schubert/Berio at the Elbphilharmonie Hamburg.

Luciano Berio, one of the most important Italian composers of the 20th century, had a unique relationship with musical tradition and created numerous arrangements, orchestrations, and transcriptions of composers ranging from Monteverdi to Mahler, and even The Beatles.

While Berio’s reworkings are often subtle, in the piece he completed in 1989 titled Rendering, his skill as an arranger merges almost entirely with his original compositional voice. The work is based on the fragments of Schubert’s Symphony No. 10 in D major, D. 936A—and, according to Berio and others, the Andante in B minor already anticipates elements of Mahler’s music.

“This restoration follows the principles of modern fresco restoration, which aims to revive the original colors without concealing the damage caused by time—damage that has often left irreparable gaps in the composition,”
— Luciano Berio
