Luciano Berio’s Musical Theater: 2010-2013

Symposia

The project Luciano Berio's Musical Theater is the result of a collaboration between the D.M.C.E. (Dramaturgie Musicale Contemporaine en Europe), Université de Paris VIII; the Fondazione Giorgio Cini in Venice and the Centro Studi Luciano Berio; it is directed by Giordano Ferrari with scientific coordination of Talia Pecker Berio, Gianmario Borio, Angela Ida De Benedictis, Giovanni Morelli and Gianfranco Vinay.

Each meeting is dedicated to one theater work: the first day’s study of Passaggio was hosted at the Fondazione Giorgio Cini, Venice, on the 25th of September 2010 (for more information on the program, click here). The second appointment was host in Paris on the 17th and 18th of November 2011 at the Citè de la Musique, and it will focus on Opera and La vera storia. The contributions to the first seminar are now published on the D.M.C.E. website, at this link: http://www2.univ-paris8.fr/DMCE/page.php?page=9 (it is necessary to sign into the website to download the texts). With the gradual publication of the contributions, we will obtain a comprehensive overview of Berio’s theatrical process, which at the end of the project will result in the publication of the acts in book form. The last meeting will be an additional seminar, in which prominent academics will make presentations synthesizing the contributions made by participants in the preceding seminars. Each seminar will comprise a general presentation of the theatrical work along with talks dedicated to the musical and dramaturgical analysis of individual theatrical productions, to relative aesthetic context, and to the different questions implied by each piece.
